Phytoplankton Observations on the Outer Banks, NC
The
Phytofinders, a group of science students from First Flight High School (FFHS),
will be our guests on Wednesday night, November 18. Student-scientists
from FFHS have been sampling local near-shore ocean waters for over 10 years
under the direction of OBX Green Drinks member, and FFHS science teacher, Katie
Neller, looking for harmful algal blooms.
This
year's Phytofinders recently presented at the Oceans 2015 conference in
Washington, DC. This biannual conference is sponsored by the Marine
Technology Society and the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society. The students
will share with us the results of their research on an algal bloom in 2014, as
well as seasonal and geographic changes in the phytoplankton populations off
our coast.
Join us on Wednesday, 11/18 for a lively discussion and learning
experience. Please RSVP by responding to this message or by sending an
email to obxgreendrinks@gmail.com
so we know how many people will be joining us. Bobbie would appreciate knowing
how many people to expect so she can plan her staffing.
