During World War Two, a large part of the Battle of the Atlantic took place in the waters off the North Carolina Outer Banks. In fact, the patrol of German U-boats along Cape Hatteras marked the closest that the war came to the American mainland. To this day, the remains of Allied, Axis, and merchant vessels can still be found along the North Carolina coast.
For the past four years, NOAA’s Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, along with UNC Coastal Studies Institute and additional partners, has conducted non-invasive archaeological and biological surveys of these historically significant, cultural resources. Join Lauren Heesemann, Research Coordinator for the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, as she brings these shipwrecks, their history and amazing stories to you.
